OK, let’s begin.
When importing beer into the UK, several important factors affect the total cost — especially excise duty. Even if some do not apply to your shipment, it is worth understanding them.
Small Producer Relief (SPR)
Small breweries can benefit from significantly reduced Alcohol Duty rates.
Current rules (2026): A brewery qualifies for Small Producer Relief if it produces 4,500 hectolitres or less of pure alcohol per year.
Most mass-produced international brands do not qualify. However, many independent and craft breweries do. This relief can make a big difference to the duty you pay.
Contact our Imports Team for a personalised duty calculation based on your specific beer and supplier.
High Strength Beer Surcharge
Beer with an ABV above 8.5% is charged at a higher rate of duty.
